Taig mailed me a new accessory for the lathe, the #1045ER ER16 to 3/4"-16 Taig lathe spindle adapter. The hexagonal portion threads onto the lathe spindle. The collet is inserted into the nut (snapping into the eccentric ring) and then screwed loosely into the body. Then the tooling or workpiece is inserted into the collet and the collet tightened.

Power off and lock out the machine. Remove the necessary covers to access the axis with the problem. Remove the axis motor cover. Install the coupler-installation tool [1] on the motor coupling. Turn the ballscrew so you can see the screw [4] for the motor-coupling clamp. Remove the motor screws [2].

The double ball nuts result in steadier torques, lesser friction, and longer life cycle compared to single ball nut systems. On the electronics end, the Z-axis handles on the manual mill have been replaced by NEMA 34 stepper motors while the X and Y axes have NEMA 23 stepper motors.

The Taig mill doesn't miss a single bit. My favourite wax bit is a 1/8" (0.125") diameter bit that tapers 3 degrees (6 total) to a 0.003" tip. Any run-out whatsoever would make this bit unusable. The Taig ER16 collet system is capable. This is why I am calling the mill a sleeper.

Taig has just released a ballscrew option for the mill. The ballscrews are precision matched with the ball bearings resulting in nearly zero backlash and low friction operation. As the ballscrew mills have about half of the drive reduction as the leadscrew version we are using 276-oz in motors which are a better match for the motion profile.
